As part of the University's ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, the University of Notre Dame will transition to a pay-to-charge model for commuter EV charging stations beginning Monday, August 10.
For several years, Notre Dame has provided EV charging as a benefit to campus employees, students, and visitors. As the number of EVs on campus has grown, so have the costs associated with operating and maintaining the University's charging infrastructure, including equipment maintenance, system upgrades, electricity, troubleshooting, and ongoing management. Implementing a pay-to-charge system aligns Notre Dame with common industry practices while helping ensure the long-term sustainability and reliability of our charging network.
What You Need to Know
-
Beginning Monday, August 10, all users of University EV charging stations will be required to pay for charging.
-
The charging rate will be $0.45 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
-
The same charging rate will apply to all users, regardless of whether you are a student, employee, or visitor.
-
Charging sessions are limited to 4 hours.
-
After 4 hours, an overstay fee of $1.00 per minute will be assessed until the vehicle is removed from the charging station and EV parking spot.
-
New users will be prompted to create an account and submit payment through the charging station when using the system.
EV Parking Remains an Important Benefit
The University continues to provide designated EV parking spaces as an incentive for EV ownership. However, complimentary electricity will no longer be offered. Campus charging stations are intended as a convenience for commuters and are not designed to serve as the primary charging source for EV owners.
Parking Enforcement
Parking regulations for EV charging spaces remain in effect. Vehicles parked in designated EV charging spaces must be plugged into the charging station and actively charging. Vehicles that are not plugged in, are not actively charging, and/or remain parked in an EV charging space for an extended period of time are subject to citation and may be impounded at the owner's expense.
The University will continue to monitor EV parking and charging usage and periodically evaluate the program to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the campus community.
