It can be hard to put yourself first, but Notre Dame Wellness Center can help.

During busy times of the year, it’s easy to neglect your own needs with the often-empty promise that you’ll refuel later. Believe it or not, when you take time for yourself you actually have the capacity to give more to others – and the health benefits are clear.

Take time to refuel and allow others to support you when you need it most. Notre Dame Wellness Center is here with strategies to promote your wellbeing and help reduce stress.

Try these tips for some well-deserved “me” time:

Learn to say no. It’s okay. If you’re feeling stressed or overworked, saying yes to additional responsibilities or even social engagements can lead to burnout, anxiety or irritability. Your wellbeing is more important than your to-do list.
Move daily. Establish a routine that works for you. Incorporate exercises such as walking, tennis or yoga or other activities you enjoy that can easily fit into your schedule.
Prioritize sleep. Set a bedtime that is 7-8 hours before you need to wake up. If you can, include an extra 30-60 minutes to practice other forms of self-care such as reading, meditating or listening to music. This will help you wind down.

Schedule quiet time. Even something as simple as waking up 15 minutes early or taking a walk around the block at lunch can make a big difference. Share your plan with your family or co-workers so they know to respect this time.

Register how you’re feeling.

Taking time for yourself can improve your mental health, or at least give you a chance to check in on how you’re feeling. If you’re struggling even in those quiet moments to think positive thoughts, Talk to a Provider at Notre Dame Wellness Center. We’re here to help.
